He married at 33, and he and his wife had a daughter. The marriage lasted two-and-a-half years.
He became a free-lance journalist, and has specialized in law and computer technology, privacy and censorship. He has been a regular contributor to The Register and The Guardian.
He met Andrea through a newspaper advert, and they have a son. At Christmas 2009 John told Andrea of his gender troubles. In January 2010 Jane changed her name legally, and was diagnosed as gender dysphoric by an NHS psychiatrist and and a specialist. In February she and Andrea were profiled in The Daily Mail, and was also subjected to an ignorant attack by Catherine Dagger who claims that it is merely a mid-life crisis.
