Jo Shanley (1936 - ) machinist

Joseph Shanley of Billerica, Massachusetts, had felt since childhood that he was the wrong sex. In 1969, at age 33, Shanley went to Casablanca and had surgery with Dr Burou.

However on return Shanley continued dressing as a man to keep his job as a machinist. Shanley dressed and lived as Jo outside work.

Shanley retired in 2001, and with her sister, Ann Cavanaugh, bought a house in Claremont, New Hampshire. After a few weeks, it was apparent that the arrangement was not working, and the house was put back on the market. On October 4^th three real estate agents and two prospective buyers heard gunshots, found Shanley apparently intoxicated, and Cavanaugh dead on a bedroom floor.

Joseph Shanley was arrested, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, and was sentenced to 22 years to life. Shanley also filed a motion to be declared a woman. The state attorneys objected to the motion on procedural and jurisdictional grounds in that the court had no power to make such a ruling.

However, after Shanley's physical state was confirmed, the prosecutors were agreeable that she be placed in a Connecticut prison with a special transgender unit. A year later she was transferred to the Correctional Center for Women, in Purdy, Washington.

There are unanswered questions.   Was the sister unaware of Jo’s womanhood?   If not, what was Jo thinking in agreeing to share a house?  Shanley was presenting as male at the time of arrest, even though she had retired and moved to another town.

John (1918 - ?) truck driver.

Frank was raised in a Baltimore orphanage. It was known that he was ‘physically abnormal’, and at age 7 he was diagnosed with hypospadias and undescended testicles, and taken to the Johns Hopkins Hospital. The doctors, including Hugh Hampton Young, found a vagina, uterus, left ovary and Fallopian tubes, and decided that the child was definitely female. What had previously been seen as his penis was now declared to be an enlarged clitoris.

The child’s guardians were informed and Frank became Frances. Two years later Frances returned to Johns Hopkins with the complaint that she felt pressure to keep her clitoris hidden. It was mentioned that she had a “terrible habit” of masturbation. It made sense to the doctors that her clitoris should be removed, and they did so remarking that it was the size of a penis of a boy of the same age.

Frances next returned four years later at age 16, complaining of a mass in her lower abdomen. She had announced that when she turned 18 she would assume male attire and learn a mechanical trade. She was already 5’11” (1.8 m) and 125 lb (57 kg). She had beard growth on her chin and the ‘mammary regions were entirely masculine’, although her pubic hair was female in distribution. This time surgery found testicular tissue. Given that the damage had been done four years earlier, they excised all the testicular tissue and a rudimentary vas deferens.

The patient was last heard of in 1935. He had changed his name to John, and was working as a truck driver. He was reportedly happy.

 Dr Young finishes his account by speculating: 'If implantation of ovaries ever becomes successful in the human should this be done?'  He was still not accepting John's decision to be a man.  I think that we can assume that he knew about the failure to implant ovaries into Lili Elvenes (Elbe) as the English translation of Man into Woman had been available since 1933. 

Buck Angel (1972 - ) adult film maker.

Susan was a tomboy as a child in San Francisco’s San Fernando Valley.

As a young woman she used the name Laura, and worked as model, but she was uncomfortable as a woman, and did a lot of drugs and alcohol. She hung out with butch lesbians because there was nowhere to go.

Transitioning in his twenties, he had top surgery and hormones, which he supplemented with bodybuilding. He was husband to Ilsa Strix (Karin Winslow), a top dominatrix in Los Angeles, until she left him in 2003 for Lana Wachowshi, one of the two directors of the Matrix films.

Buck moved to New Orleans to be with his second wife, body piercer, tattooer and body modification enthusiast Elayne Angel - he took her name, and became Buck Angel. He then sought work as a trans-porn actor.

In 2005, Buck was the first trans man in an all-male porn film, and he was in another film where he had sex with trans woman Allanah Starr. For the latter he was nominated for Transsexual Performer of the Year and Most Outrageous Sex Scene. In January 2007, Buck won Transsexual Performer of the Year at the Adult Video News Awards.

In 2008 he and Allanah  were sculpted life-size by London artist Marc Quinn.

Buck is the best-known and best-paid FTM porn star. He is billed as ‘a real man, with a real pussy’.

He frequently appears on talk shows and at sex conventions.

Josef Kirchner (1964 - ) performer, changeback.

Charles Kirchner started psychological counseling at age 17 after a brief experiment with homosexuality, and after two years started estrogen therapy and a real-life test as Judy. At 24 she had genital surgery in Europe. She was very pleased with her surgical results and still boasts of her 8-inch (20 cm) depth and orgasmic ability.

She married a man without telling of her past, and then after divorce married another who knew of her past. This marriage also ended in divorce. She worked as a model and entertainer. In 1999 she paid Dr Ousterhout $30,000 for facial feminization.

In April 2000 while living in Aberdeen, South Dakota, after 17 years of living as Judy, she heard a radio interview with Richard Cohen, the unlicensed reparative therapist, that left her with the idea that she was not ‘born this way’ and could choose. She participated in Jews Offering New Alternatives to Homosexuality (JONAH), a ex-gay organization, and with them prayed to get past her homosexuality and her transsexuality. She also wrote for Jerry Leach’s Reality Resources and put up a web site helpmereversemysexchange.org which appealed for funds to detransition, and said some strong things which alienated other transsexuals.

Film maker Tom Murray saw the website and filmed Judy, and then Josef as he became after breast implant removal, chest re-construction, testosterone therapy and much pumping iron.

After Murray’s documentary, Josef was diagnosed as having chromosomal mosaicism, a mix of 46,XY (normal male) and 45,X (Turner’s Syndrome).

He moved to Los Angeles and started advertising himself on contact sites as Mangina Man (Mangina = Man + Vagina). He emphasized that he is a man with a vagina, and is seeking male sexual partners. In 2008 he was featured, along with Michael Berke, in an MSNBC documentary on the topic of changing back to male.

He no longer considers himself to be religious, and is no longer anti-transsexual. He has become a contact point for men who wish to remain socially masculine, but have a vagina, and he campaigns that this become an allowed option.

He is also doing a PhD in psychology.

There is no term for men who wish to become men with vaginas. Nor for FTMs who wish to stay at that stage as opposed to those who stay as men with vaginas because of financial or health constraints. Buck Angel, of course, is making good money as 'a real man with a real pussy'.

For FTMs or for genetic males, this is a gender variation, and should be acknowledged.

Kirchner will have great difficulties with WPATH etc. for genetic males, especially as there cannot be a real-life test before surgery.
